Make no mistake about it. June is one of the most important times of the year for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Questioning (LGBTQIA+) community in the United States and elsewhere. In June, parades with floats, celebrities and parties commemorate a period of change that was not expected to experience anywhere near this rate of progress during the mid 20th century. However, society’s perceptions of LGBTQIA+ individuals have changed dramatically since the Stonewall Riots in 1969 in New York City. With that being said there is still work that needs to be done in addition to the current progress made.
The LGBTQIA+ aging community is growing, and it’s in your best interest to learn about their needs.
Everyone deserves to age with dignity and respect. But that’s not always what happens in the real world—especially for people who don’t fit into traditional, heteronormative standards of aging. The LGBTQIA+ aging community has specific needs that aren’t being met by current care services, and it’s time we took a closer look at what those needs are so we can start meeting them.
If you love someone who identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and want to help them age with the support and dignity they deserve then check out some of the resources below:
1) A resource for caregivers who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community
2) A resource for people who need help finding an LGBTQIA+ affirming care facility
We advocate and support all our caregivers in the LGBTQIA+ community and will continue to fight for equality of our brothers and sisters!!!
